I am a huge advocate for .22 LR as a first firearm. Seriously; a 10/22 or similar rifle is fun, cheap, functional, and reliable... But, AFTER that, an SKS is a great entry into a "real" caliber. My first SKS was my first rifle after a 10/22. .
